The Chinatown field trip (Sunday, February 17, 2002) was the first one that I facilitated for the Club. I offer the following thoughts for those members who may be unsure about their ability to lead a trip:

1. Photographic expertise or experience is not a requirement. I am a novice photographer, but I did not let that fact prevent me from volunteering to lead the trip. If you enjoy interacting with people and are enthusiastic about a particular photo subject, you can facilitate a trip.

2. I did not accept the facilitator role thinking that I was solely responsible for ensuring a productive outcome for the trip. I believe that Club members are sufficiently mature, competent and fun loving, that all I had to do was to provide some basic organizational structure for the trip (i.e., determining date, time and meeting place; finding out any required fees and restrictions; receiving rsvp's; scouting out the site if necessary).

3. Some field trips may benefit from background information given to participants prior to the trip. In the case of the Chinatown trip, I thought it would be useful if members had a basic understanding of the meaning of the Lion Dance. So, I prepared a handout sheet that I distributed on the day of the shoot. At the February 23 critique session, it was suggested that it would be more helpful if the background information could have been sent out before the trip. I agree.

4. Some field trips may be conducive to a social event after the shoot (e.g., lunch, coffee, dinner). If this is the case, it should be considered because it is a way to "debrief" our experience and to get to know other members better.

5. Facilitating the Chinatown trip was a pleasant experience. I would encourage all club members who have not led a trip, and who may be reluctantly considering doing so, to go for it. You will enjoy the ride.
